The National Optical Fibre Network, a Govt of India project to connect all 250,000 panchayats and local bodies in India through a broadband network seems to be going well. According to Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Union Minister for ICT in the Modi cabinet, yesterday told that NoFN has covered 48000 km in just one year. He, however, did not divulge other details of the project but informed that the project is underway and is expected to cover the whole India.
The industry is betting big on NoFN since it will allow a lot of businesses to function from rural and remote areas in India thereby offering jobs to locals. The startup ecosystem will kickstart significantly if the project is complete within the specified period. It is to be noted the the project is already late. But the delay was caused by the previous government due to allegations of embezzlement in offering tenders. The Voice&Data magazine had exposed the process of giving tenders to a few companies.
