Indian Telecos announce free calls to Earthquake-affected Nepal

Indian telecom operators have come in support of the measures taken to normalize the life in Nepal and have thus announced free and cheap calls to Nepal from their network. Today, all operators issued statements cutting down their tariffs to the Himalyan country. 

MTS statement was issued today. "Starting 11 pm, 25th April , MTS India is treating all calls made from its network to Nepal as local calls i.e Rs1/minute. This is being done for the next 48 hours to support disaster relief efforts and to enable concerned callers to reach out to their friends and family in the earthquake affected areas in the neighbouring country. The Company has also sent out SMS to its entire base of prepaid and post paid customers informing them about the special call rates."

Official Statement from Vodafone India also reached media people. It says: "Vodafone India, in its efforts to support the local community and brothers of Nepal along with other disaster relief initiatives has announced that all calls made from its network from anywhere in India to Nepal will be charged as per local rate. This move will enable people to reach out to their friends and family members in the earthquake impacted areas in the country of Nepal. Vodafone is facilitating all calls made to Nepal at just Re.1/min against the regular call rate of Rs. 12/min with immediate effect upto 10:00hrs on 28th of April 2015‎.

 It further says that Vodafone remains committed to providing relief to all affected by the calamity and will continue to undertake such measures to ensure there are no gaps in communication during the time of such crisis.

Aircel offers FREE calling & Incoming Roaming to Nepal. Its statement reads: "Aircel offers free calls to Nepal for all its customers for the next two days i.e. 27th and 28th April 2015, in its support towards the natural calamity faced by the country. This facility has been extended to all Aircel customers across India for the next 48 hours, in light of the vulnerable situation prevailing in Nepal after the massive earthquake hit the country yesterday. The offer has been extended to all prepaid and postpaid customers of Aircel. Additionally, those customers travelling to Nepal during this hour of crisis will also get Free Incoming while Roaming into Nepal for the next 48 hours. Aircel has also waived off International Roaming Rental Deduction for its prepaid customers."

Tata Teleservices did not remain behind and came forward with an official statement, “In this time of crisis caused by the tragic Nepal earthquake, to enable our Tata Docomo customers reach their loved ones in Nepal and to support disaster relief measures, charges for all calls to Nepal on the Tata Docomo network is reduced to 1p/s between 26th to 28th April. We have already informed about this special call rates through SMS to all our customers.”

Even Videocon showed solidarity with the earthquake-affected Nepal and announced cheap calls to the country. Starting midnight tonight Videocon Telecom extends all ISD calls to earthquake-hit Nepal @ local call rates for the next 2 days, says the media statement.
