WiFi is suddenly in the limelight as the operators want to be able to provide the access to the Indians. Since 3G has failed to offer the hi-speed access to the Indians, now the state-owned operator BSNL has plans to utilized its fibre network to offer carrier grade WiFi to the citizens. According to the sources, BSNL will spend as much as Rs 7000 crore on WiFI connectivity in the rural areas.
Recently at an event the BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava said, "BSNL does not have 4G network so the only choice the company has is to offer hi-speed wireless internet through WiFi." BSNL has the biggest rural reach and is the 2nd largest operator in the country which has its fibre already in place to offer WiFi.
BSNL's WiFi plans will give tough competition to Reliance Jio as they have spend considerable amount on buying the 4G spectrum. If Reliance Jio does not start its services soon, it is bound to lose the market and will face penalties from the government. It has launch its services by June this year. BSNL has the bright opportunity to offer wireless WiFi in the country side.
