Time to open eyes for CIOs

It appears that only big enterprises are keen to adopt long term IT plans. Mid size and small players are focused on ‘Jugad’ practice. They do not use standard hardware in their data center that can save their electricity. Bigger players whose businesses are entirely dependent on the uptime of data center have adopted the green practices.

Most of the Indian organizations have to wake up and graduate to the next level to modernize their data center and adopt the green norms. It is important that even mid size players do also play a role in moving to the greener environments. It will help them by cutting their power bills.

Organizations have to move beyond the incremental changes and look at all aspects to rebuild their data centers.  Many of the organizations are taking this trouble out of the premise to the experts hosting their data at the third party data centers.

Organizations are losing significant amount of money on their running data centers which can otherwise be saved. It appears that the matter needs thought not just from CIOs but from the senior management or CEO. Only the top management can reduce the gaps that exist in various departments. Often CIOs are not able to communicate the benefits of a technology to their bosses. Since CIOs do not pay the electricity bills, they tend to ignore this fact. However, it is an important aspect and needs attention.
