Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has an ambitious plan for its
telecom operations. The Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio Infocomm
Limited (RJIL) is expected to start its highly awaited 4G services by
September this year in two metros - Delhi and Mumbai. A source within
the company was quoted as saying, "Reliance Jio is engaged in building
up team for telecom services which is almost done. Telecom services are
likely to be launched in third quarter of 2014 i.e. July-September
period starting from Delhi and Mumbai."
In July 2013, Reliance
had announced an ambitious expansion plan for the whole 4G setup. The
company announced that it planned to add around 7,000 employees taking
the headcount up to 10,000. Many analysts believe that the company may
share information about the launch in June. 4G trial services have
already begun in Delhi, Jamnagar and Mumbai. The Department of Telecom
has allocated 22 million numbers for launch of services. The source
added that company is evaluating devices of Korean firm Samsung and
Chinese company ZTE for its customers.
After the launch in Delhi
and Mumbai, RJIL wants to concentrate its efforts on the southern part
of India as it's a potential high-value market followed by West, North
and East. During the trial phase, the company demonstrated speeds up to
49 mbps which are around 10-12 times faster than current 3G networks. At
a speed of 49 mbps, a user can download a full movie, which is
generally of 600 megabyte size, in about 2 minutes.
A unique plan
to create a Wi-Fi zone inside one's home is under work. RJIL plans to
create an architecture where an antenna will receive signal from a
mobile tower and with a wired connection to a set-top box or similar
device, users will be create a Wi-Fi network inside their homes. This
device has been developed on Google's Android platform. Besides the
wireless network, plans to connect homes deprived of strong signal with
an optic fibre cable are already in place. RJIL also has plans to launch
TV services through its 4G network.RJIL has also loaded 150 channels
that it will provide across all devices ranging from mobile phone to TV
