Internet Usage and Network Security Report 2013

Nevales Networks released Internet usage and network security report for 2013. The information was consolidated from its existing customers which largely included branch offices of enterprises and some SMBs from verticals including retail, healthcare, finance and pharmaceutical, IT enabled services etc.

Analyzing the deployed Nevales units, here is an insight into the deployment statistics; Out of units deployed :
  • 50% are on 3rd Generation Cloud platform
  • On average there are 64 users behind every device
  • Number of logins per day are approx 10K
  • 515M unencrypted requests logged per month to 1.11 M unique domains
  • 15k websites constitute to 95% of the websites accessed by users

Here are some figures and key trends around Internet usage:
  • Increased usage of wireless Internet: 25% of devices using dongles.
  • Decrease in viruses and spam constituting to better security of the mail servers. 35% use Antivirus and 20% use Antispam on email.
  • Combination of protective and enabling security measures: 30% use VPN and 85% devices use some kind of URL blocking.

The key features used include firewall, VPN, content filtering followed by dual ISP load balancing and failover. Approx. 25% have enabled authentication on their device. Antivirus and antispam are not the most popular features in the checklist of the organizations when it comes to securing networks, but there is strong inclination for features which help the employers in structuring the usage of Internet i.e. corporate security policy for blocking unauthorized access, encrypted methods for communications etc.
