India's Database market heats up

Universal fact is that big data is really big and will stay, influencing market dynamics in the enterprise sector. Looking at the growing market for data storage and data management needs, several vendors such as Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, etc have left no stone unturned to grab market share. Surely Oracle holds the 65 percent database market in India. However, the opportunity is so big that even the smallest vendors are putting in their best to gain footing in the subcontinent.

Recently we have seen two open source Database players scouting for opportunities in the Indian market--MangalDB and EnterpriseDB. MangalDB is a growing startup which has grabbed the attention of the investors. They have recently set their foot in the local market and are looking at opportunities to do business. EnterpriseDB is also a known player from the database space which is vying for business opportunities for its open source offering. They anticipate opportunities in the government sector, since the Indian government is much more inclined towards open source technologies unlike other governments in the world.

With more than 90% of the world’s data produced in the last two years, the database industry is India is experiencing a never before boom. This has led to the popularization of applications built on the open source PostgreSQL not only amongst enterprises but government agencies too. The paradigm shift is happening swiftly, majorly because PostgreSQL allows customers the best of both the worlds – it can be easily deployed alongside traditional relational Oracle, Microsoft, IBM databases or as a replacement, and simultaneously offers enhanced capabilities with an almost 90% cost reduction.
