In August 2013, the first Google Impact Challenge was launched in India, inviting Indian nonprofits to propose how they would make India and the world a better place using technology. Today, the top 10 finalists were revealed, four of which will each be awarded a Rs 3 crore Global Impact Award and mentoring from Google to deliver on their project.
From now until October 30th 2013 at 11:59 p.m., the public is invited to cast their vote for a winner of a Rs 3 crore Global Impact Award at g.co/indiachallenge.
The 10 finalists and a brief overview of their project goals, which tackle problems ranging from rural education to agricultural development to sanitation, can be found below:
Agastya: Launch a network of motorbike science labs to address the lack of science equipment and digital resources for rural children (www.agastya.org)
Breakthrough: Launch and scale a data-driven digital toolkit to enable anyone to launch an effective campaign to reduce gender-based violence (www.breakthrough.tv)
Chintan Environmental Research & Action Group: Develop an online marketplace and integrated mobile app to organize waste pickers and address the growing problem of trash in Delhi (www.chintan-india.org)
Digital Green: Scale a video hub and an online knowledge platform to help farmers gain the agricultural skills they need to lower their costs and increase their productivity
Going to School Fund: Create open source mobile games to teach critical entrepreneurship skills to India’s children (www.goingtoschool.com)
Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship & Democracy: Create online and mobile apps to connect citizens to their government representatives in urban India (www.janaagraha.org)
Pratham Books: Build a collaborative, open platform that lets people share, translate and create children’s e-books to provide kids with easy access to language-appropriate reading materials (www.pratham.org)
Prayas Energy Group: Deploy a network of real-time sensors to monitor power supply provided by utility companies and improve power distribution quality in India (www.prayaspune.org)
Shelter Associates: Conduct digital mapping of urban slums to identify service gaps and inform better infrastructure planning and sanitation development (www.shelter.com)
Social Awareness, Newer Alternatives: Combine solar-powered micro-ionizing water purification and biodigesting technology to improve water and sanitation infrastructure for rural villages (www.sana.org.in)
